An ANNALS Launch Event Co-Sponsored by AEI, Brookings, and AAPSS
What do we know about the effectiveness of the many social welfare programs that constitute America’s social “safety net”? How should we approach reforming these “entitlement” programs so they’re better at doing what they’re designed to do and remain fiscally viable for future generations? In 2018, the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) invited national experts to author a special issue of The ANNALS focused on answering these question. The result is a comprehensive, critical look at the nation’s means-tested transfer and social insurance programs, with an eye toward fundamental reforms that address their adequacy and solvency.
AEI, the Brookings Institution, and AAPSS invite you to an event on Monday, November 21, marking the release of this publication. The editors of the November 2019 ANNALS volume, James Ziliak of the University of Kentucky and Robert Moffitt of the Johns Hopkins University, will discuss why a critical look at safety net programs is warranted and summarize findings; presentations on Social Security, Medicare, and the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs will illustrate the approaches of the 11 research papers. A panel discussion will follow, led by AEI President Robert Doar.
